The iconic Harlem Globetrotters dribbled their way into the hearts of hundreds of students at the Anne Frank Elementary school in Dallas, Texas, on January 18th, 2024 as part of their heartwarming ‘Great Assist’ community initiative. This initiative aims to shine a light on extraordinary individuals who selflessly assist others, embodying the Globetrotters' values of leadership, sportsmanship, and community.
The Dallas season-kickoff event was extra special, as the players had the privilege of meeting and recognizing Mathias, a courageous 5th grader battling brain cancer. Despite his challenges, Mathias exemplifies leadership and compassion, consistently assisting his classmates and demonstrating unwavering positivity. Mathias's infectious smile and determination has resonated with his peers and teachers and he was nominated by his campus for the award.
Players ‘Speedy’ Artis, ‘Sweet Lou II’ Dunbar, ‘Zeus’ McClurkin presented him with the first ‘Great Assist’ award of the 2024 season, Globetrotters memorabilia, premium tickets to their upcoming game in Dallas and most importantly, their genuine admiration and support. During the Feb. 10 game at American Airlines Arena, Mathias will also be recognized for his award and contributions to his community.
The Globetrotters also spread their signature brand of joy by visiting classrooms on campus. As players walked the halls, they dazzled students with ball-handling wonders and encouraged teamwork. Emphasizing the importance of being a ‘Great Assist’ both on and off the court and highlighting the power of helping others to make a positive impact.
The Harlem Globetrotters' Great Assist is a testament to the power of sports to inspire and uplift. By recognizing everyday heroes like Mathias and spreading their message of teamwork and commitment, the Globetrotters are leaving a lasting impact on communities across the country.
