17 Olivet players named “Junior Phenoms” by the original Ambassadors of Goodwill for executing incredible play
The Harlem Globetrotters have recognized all 17 members of the Olivet Middle School football team as Junior Phenoms for the amazing character and teamwork they demonstrated during a recent youth football game in Michigan. The eighth grade team caught the attention of the Globetrotters after the young players orchestrated a plan to kneel at the one-yard-line to set up a touchdown for their teammate Keith Orr, who battles learning disabilities.
In addition to Junior Phenom certificates, every player on the team will receive two tickets to see the Globetrotters game at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014. Before tip-off, the eighth graders will be invited to center court to be acknowledged by the Globetrotters in front of several thousand fans.
“This is the first time we’ve given Junior Phenom awards to an entire team,” said Harlem Globetrotters star Special K Daley, “but every member of the Olivet Middle School football team is deserving of this honor, as they all demonstrated what it means to be goodwill ambassadors. They are a team we all can look up to.”
Known as the Ambassadors of Goodwill™, the Globetrotters look for stories of amazing kids who spread their own goodwill and demonstrate traits like helping others, assisting in the community, outstanding teamwork and being positive role models. The Globetrotters Junior Phenom Award is the team’s way of saying, “Thank you,” and applauding those individuals who go above and beyond.
The Globetrotters pride themselves in teaching youth the importance of character development with programs such as, “The ABCs of Bullying Prevention,” which the Globetrotters present to over 300 schools each year. The Olivet football team embodies everything the ABCs stand for— taking Action to help others, demonstrating Bravery to stand up for what you believe, and showing Compassion.
The Globetrotters bring their 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour to the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.
