Famed Sports Writer Frank Deford Dies at Age 78

In 1973, one of the country’s most famed sports writers, Frank Deford, traveled with the Harlem Globetrotters to Europe in preparation for a special Sports Illustrated feature on the iconic team. As the Globetrotters and their traveling opponent, the New York Nationals, prepared to wrap up their overseas tour, the 6-foot-4 sports writer and broadcaster received the invitation of a lifetime – a chance to play against Trotters during their stop in Bologna, Italy.  Below, the six-time U.S. sports writer of the year, who passed away recently, recounts what it was like to don the baby blue Nationals’ uniform and play against the world's most beloved court jesters.
